C5 stands for Care, Counsel, Community, Commission, and Church. Our mission is to equip leaders to care for those entrusted to them, counsel them towards God, and foster strong biblical community. The goal? Never leave someone solely in care or counsel, but instead guide them into a supportive, thriving community.
ย
๐๏ธ Welcome back to the podcast!
ย
Today, weโre diving into C5 Leadershipโa framework designed to equip church leaders to care well, counsel wisely, build Christ-centered community, commission others, and ultimately establish healthy churches both locally and globally. Our primary focus is Westminster Baptist Church, but these principles extend to all believers seeking to lead well in their churches and communities.
Key Discussion Points:
1. Speaking Truth in Love: (Ephesians 4:15) Paul instructs believers to speak the truth in love, allowing us to grow into Christ, our head. This involves both truth and loveโone without the other can lead to either harshness or false comfort. Truth without love can be destructive. Love without truth can lead to compromise and apathy.
2. The Challenges of Speaking Truth in Love: How do we balance truth and love, especially when correction is needed? Does intent matter more than words? Is it okay to call someone out in a group, or should it be private? Whatโs the role of relationship in delivering truth?
Practical Takeaway: โ Seek first to understand before speaking. โ Approach conversations with humility and a heart posture of love. โ If correction is needed, consider context and relationship before addressing the issue.
3. Truth vs. Lies: How Do We Filter What We Hear? Before speaking truth, we need to discover truth. How do we uncover truth? Through Godโs Wordโfiltering everything through Scripture. By asking good questionsโdigging deeper into situations. Through wise counselโseeking input from godly people.
Practical Takeaway: โ Don't rely on perception aloneโinvestigate before speaking. โ Ensure your words align with biblical truth before giving advice or correction. โ Surround yourself with wise, godly people who help refine your perspective.
4. The Role of Community in Speaking Truth in Love: Speaking truth in love is best done in relationship. Community leaders (life group leaders, discipleship leaders, ministry heads) must navigate when, where, and how to correct and encourage others.
Public vs. Private Correction: Some situations require one-on-one conversation (Matthew 18 principle). Others may benefit from group discussion for accountability and teaching.
Practical Takeaway: โ Develop trust and relationships before offering correction. โ Know when to speak privately vs. bring issues to a group setting. โ Allow trusted voices to sharpen your approach before speaking.
5. The Opposite of Love: Hate or Apathy? Is hate the opposite of love, or is it apathy? Apathy (not caring) is dangerousโit means we donโt love enough to help someone grow. Hate, in the biblical sense, is not always sinfulโGod โhatesโ sin because it destroys life. Acceptance without truth isnโt loveโitโs apathy.
Practical Takeaway: โ Love actively seeks the best for others, even when truth is hard. โ Apathy says, โDo whatever you want,โ but true love leads people toward life in Christ. โ Be willing to engage in tough conversations with grace and wisdom.
6. Implementing This in Your Leadership (Care, Counsel, Community): Leaders must move toward people, even in difficult situations. Growth requires both truth and loveโone without the other is ineffective. Humility is keyโwe donโt have all the answers, but we can point people to Christ. Be a good Bereanโknow Godโs Word so you can filter truth properly.
Practical Takeaway: โ Commit to listening before speaking. โ Lead with grace, wisdom, and Scripture. โ Recognize that growth is a processโitโs slow, messy, and requires patience.
Final Thoughts & Call to Action: How are you speaking truth in love? Are you filtering what you hear through Godโs Word? Are you leading with humility, patience, and wisdom?

This podcast episode focuses on Romans 1:16-17, emphasizing that the gospel reveals both the power and righteousness of God, making it something believers should not be ashamed of. Pastor Matt explains that Paul wrote to a mixed audience of Jews and Gentiles in Rome, addressing their struggles with unity and confidence in the gospel within a politically and intellectually dominant society. Paul boldly declares his lack of shame in the gospel because it demonstrates Godโs power for salvation and His righteousness.
ย
Key points:
โก๏ธ The Gospel's Power: The gospel is transformative, overcoming sin, Satan, and death, not just in the future but in the present (the "already, not yet" theological concept).
โก๏ธ Godโs Righteousness: This refers to both God's faithfulness and the way He makes people righteous through faith, not works.
โก๏ธ Faith Over Works: Salvation has always been by faith, as seen in Habakkuk 2:4, which Paul quotes to emphasize that righteousness comes through faith, for both Jews and Gentiles.
โก๏ธ Challenges and Mockery: Paul faced rejection and ridicule for following Christ, but he saw the gospel as a source of glory, not shame.
ย
Relevance Today: Reflect on whether you are ashamed of the gospel in how you live, share, and believe in it, especially in a skeptical world. Trust in Godโs power and righteousness, live out the gospel boldly, and grow spiritually through study and community.

๐1 Kings and John 11ย
Today, we're continuing our discussion on C5 Leadership, part of Westminster Baptist Church's discipleship efforts to commission people for building healthy churches in Carroll County and beyond.
Focus of the Episode: Physical Care
We explore how Jesus cared for those suffering physically and those grappling with temptation or sin related to physical struggles. To deepen this discussion, we reflect on 1 Kings 17-18, the story of Elijah, Ahab, and Jezebel.
Key Points:
- Elijah declared a famine, disrupting Israelโs way of life and challenging their loyalty to false gods.
- A pivotal showdown took place on Mount Carmel, where Elijah demonstrated God's power over false prophets.
- Through this story, we see how God provides physical care and restoration even during crises of faith.
As you listen, reflect on how God may be calling you to care well for others and bring them closer to His community.

As we dive deeper into the book of Proverbs this week, let's reflect on the call to humble ourselves before God. Fear of the Lord is the path to true wisdomโit reminds us to admit our limitations, trust in God's provisions, and build confidence not in ourselves, but in Him. Grace helps us see our failures, knowing they donโt define us, but remind us that He is our source of strength.
ย
"When arrogance comes, disgrace follows, but with humility comes wisdom." - Proverbs 11:2
ย
Gospel Response: - Admit no security. - Stop trying to gain it or manipulate it. - Embrace complete security.

Ep 198 - The Wisdom Way: Fear God to Gain Wisdom and Discipline. Proverbs 1:7
Tuesday Sep 17, 2024
Tuesday Sep 17, 2024
The Humble will Fear the Lord. The Wise and disciplined will Live without Dread. Discipline is not mean, a lack of discipline is cruel. If we don't fear God, we most likely believe we are God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge because it's the beginning of one learning from the creator. We become wise when we fear the foolishness of not being connected to God. We become disciplined when we fear the lack of correction from God.
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline." โ Proverbs 1:7
Gospel Response: Fear the Lord, for in Him is the beginning of wisdom. ๐๏ธ Let us humble our 'right' to embrace His greater wisdom, and humble our 'wrong' to receive His loving discipline. True strength is found in surrendering both to His guidance.

Ep 197 - Worship Series: What is Christian Worship? Ephesians 5:19
Thursday Sep 12, 2024
Thursday Sep 12, 2024
Christian worship reveals God to be worth more than all else through allegiance, sacrifice, and praise. Christian worship is not music, but music can be worship. Biblical praise lifts up God in worship and others in faith. ๐ Letโs commit to worshiping God with our lives daily, allowing music to enhance our connection to Him, but not define it. ๐
ย
Gospel Response: ๐ถ Why Do You Sing? ๐ถ Is your voice lifted in Psalms, Old and New Worship Songs, or Spiritual Songs? Is singing a weapon in your arsenal against Satan, or a weapon of Satan?
